Local Race Offers Lapland Challenge

If the 13.1-mile distance isn’t tough enough for you, the official race charity for the Essar Chester Half Marathon, Northern Lights Children’s Charity, is offering a truly unique challenge.

“We are looking for runners participating in the 2019 Essar Chester Half Marathon to run the equivalent distance from Chester to Lapland,” explains Karen Jones MBE, Chair of the Northern Lights charity.

“It’s around 2,225 miles!”

But don’t panic – you won’t have to run the full distance on your own. Northern Lights Children’s Charity have kindly divided the 2,225 miles into half marathon-sized chunks. Which means they need a team of 170 runners working together to complete the Chester to Lapland distance between them.

Northern Lights Children’s Charity is a local charity which each December enables 20 children with life limiting illnesses to swap their hospital visits for sleigh rides, deep crisp snow, reindeers and snow mobiles.  It is the nominated charity for this year’s Essar Chester Half Marathon and MBNA Chester Marathon and Metric Marathon.

“Our volunteers transport them far away from appointments, treatment regimens and worries to the winter wonderland of Lapland and a very magical visit to meet Father Christmas,” adds Karen.  “However, in some cases where the children are less mobile and can’t cope with the snow and cold, we take them to Euro Disney for an equally unforgettable experience.”

One such child is 12 year old Jess Pritchard from Shotwick who suffers from West Syndrome Cerebral Palsey and Epilepsey.

Mum Shelley: “Jess and I had the most magical few days at Euro Disney which started from the moment we all met at Liverpool Airport.  We were treated like VIPs from start to finish and nothing was ever too much trouble for the wonderful helpers.  Jess had the time of her life meeting all the characters and watching the amazing shows. We would never have been able to afford such a trip and will forever be in debt to the Northern Lights Charity for the opportunity they gave us.”

“We are pleased to be supporting such a worthy local cause,” says Chris Hulse, Joint Race Organiser of Active Leisure Events.   “Each year we donate a proportion of the race entry fee to the official race charity. Last year’s Essar Chester Half Marathon runners set a new record by raising over £600,000. This year, we once again invite runners to raise money for charity and we hope lots of them will be interested in taking part in this unique challenge set by Northern Lights Children’s Charity.”
