2020 Race Cancellation FAQs
We know you will all have questions about the cancellation of our 2020 events. We have tried to answer the most common questions here.
Why have you taken the decision to cancel the remaining 2020 races and 2020 Chester Triple?
It is with regret that we have to announce the cancellation of the Essar Chester Half Marathon on 20th September. Our overriding priority is the safety and health of our runners, staff, contractors, volunteers, spectators, local community and society as a whole. It is clear that staging mass participation events this year would be inappropriate. Please read our full statement here.
What are my options now the event has been cancelled?
You should have received an email outlining your options. Most runners can:
- transfer to the Virtual Essar Chester Half Marathon
- donate your entry fee to support the future of the event
- defer your entry and receive 50% off the early bird price for the Essar Chester Half Marathon on 16th May 2021
- request a 50% refund of your entry fee
If you entered the race using a free place, you have automatically been deferred to the 2021 race and you do not need to take any further action.
If you didn't pay us directly for your place or you entered using a discount code (e.g. if was a free place from a charity, won through a competition or you transferred from another runner) then we are unable to refund you. Your email will explain details of this.
I haven't received an email - what should I do?
Please make sure you've checked all your email accounts, including your spam folders. If you still can't find your email then contact firstname.lastname@example.org stating your full name and the race you were entered into.
What is the deadline to make a decision?
Please make your decision by 31st July 2020, after this date you are waiving your right to choose an option and your entry will be cancelled.
Why are you not refunding the total entry fee?
Due to the costs already incurred for planning the event, ordering the medals, shirts, hoodies and goody bag content for the originally scheduled date in May, and further costs incurred for postponing the event, we are not able to offer a full refund. We are sorry that it cannot be more.
How do I secure my entry into the 2021 event?
We've sent all 2020 Essar Chester Half Marathon entrants an email, which will have all the options outlined in more detail. To defer, just click the button "Defer my Entry to 2021" before 31st July 2020.
If I defer to 2021 can I defer again to 2022?
No - as part of our standard policy it is to not possible to defer your entry to future races. Deferring from 2020 to 2021 is an exception due the cancellation of the race.
I want to take up the virtual race option how does this work?
Details on transferring to the virtual race are outlined in the email sent to all the 2020 Essar Chester Half Marathon entrants. You will receive further information on how to take part once you have signed up.
You must run the entire half marathon distance in one go by the participation deadline of 20th September. You must then upload supporting evidence of your participation using the link in your confirmation email. This must be done by 30th September.
Please ensure you follow all the latest government guidance when running and stay safe.
What is happening with Fun Run/Mini Marathon?
Sadly, we will not be able to offer a Fun Run this year, we look forward to seeing all our fun runners on 16th May 2021.
When will I receive my refund?
Refunds will be made within 10 working days to the card you paid with.
I can't make the 2021 date can I defer to a later edition?
We are sorry we can't offer deferral to a later edition of the Essar Chester Half Marathon. Please choose one of the alternative options.
I can't make the 2021 date can I transfer my place to another runner and if so how?
If you can't make the 2021 date and don't want to choose one of the other options available, you can defer to 2021 and then, under our usual transfer rules, you may still transfer your place to another runner.
I entered the race through a transfer what are my options?
As you didn't pay us directly for your place then we are unable to refund you as we do not hold any financial information for you. Your options are to transfer to the Virtual Event, defer to the 2021 race or to cancel your entry. Your email will explain details of this.
I entered the race through a free place what are my options?
If you registered for the race using a free place provided by one of our sponsors, partnered charities or winning a competition, your entry has been automatically deferred to next year's race on 16th May 2021.
If you cannot make the new date and would like to participate in the virtual half marathon, please email email@example.com.
What about the money I have already raised in sponsorship for charity?
Active Leisure Events do not administer the fundraising of charity runners, so you should contact the charity you have signed up with or check the guidance on your fundraising website (e.g. Just Giving, Virgin Money Giving). Your donation will be even more important than ever to the charity. You’ve already put in the hard work in your training so do consider still giving them your fundraising or continue to fundraise for next year if you have deferred your place. You could smash your target now you have more time! You can still fundraise for the virtual Chester Half Marathon.
What is happening with the 2020 Chester Triple?
Sadly there will be no 2020 Chester Triple. We know you are as disappointed as we are, but we will come back bigger and better when the Chester Triple returns in 2021.
Will there be a virtual race?
Yes, there will be a Virtual Essar Chester Half Marathon. Your email includes a link to transfer to the virtual race. You will need to run the entire half marathon distance in one go by 20th September 2020 and upload your results by 30th September 2020.
What happens to the add-on’s I ordered?
This depends on the option that you select.
- If you transfer to the Virtual Essar Chester Half Marathon then any hoodie or iTab that you ordered will also be transferred. Your hoodie will be posted to you with your medal and t-shirt and your iTab will arrive separately from iTab. Your photo order will be refunded.
- If you defer your entry to 2021 then all add-ons you ordered will automatically move across to your 2021 entry.
- If you request a refund then 100% of your add-ons will be refunded.
- If you donate your entry then your add-ons will also be donated to support the future of the event.
How will you make the 2021 events secure?
We will take the appropriate measures required to ensure the safety and health of our runners, staff, contractors, volunteers, spectators, local community and society as a whole. We will follow the latest government guidance at all times and work with the council and safety advisory groups during the planning and delivery of our 2021 events.
All aspects of our events will be reviewed and considered to ensure that they are Covid secure and appropriate to the situation (e.g. social distancing, hygiene, medical cover, our venues, the start/course/finish, drink stations, travel to/from the event).
