2020 Race Cancellation FAQs
We know you will all have questions about the cancellation of our 2020 events. We have tried to answer the most common questions here.
Why have you taken the decision to cancel the remaining 2020 races and 2020 Chester Triple?
It is with regret that we have to announce the cancellation of the MBNA Chester Marathon and Metric Marathon on 4th October 2020. Our overriding priority is the safety and health of our runners, staff, contractors, volunteers, spectators, local community and society as a whole. It is clear that staging mass participation events this year would be inappropriate. Please read our full statement here.
What are my options now the event has been cancelled?
You should have received an email outlining your options. Most runners can:
- donate your entry fee to support the future of the event
- defer your entry to the MBNA Chester Marathon on 3rd October 2021
- request a 50% refund of your entry fee
- request a 100% refund of your entry fee
- cancel your entry
If you entered the race using a free place, you have automatically been deferred to the 2021 race and you do not need to take any further action.
If you didn't pay us directly for your place or you entered using a discount code (e.g. if was a free place from a charity, won through a competition or you transferred from another runner) then we are unable to refund you. Your email will explain details of this.
I haven't received an email - what should I do?
Please make sure you've checked all your email accounts, including your spam folders. If you still can't find your email then contact email@example.com stating your full name and the race you were entered into.
What is the deadline to make a decision?
Please make your decision by 31st July 2020, after this date you are waiving your right to choose an option and your entry will be cancelled.
How do I secure my entry into the 2021 event?
We've sent all 2020 MBNA Chester Marathon and Metric Marathon entrants an email, which will have all the options outlined in more detail. To defer, just click the button "Defer my Entry to 2021" before 31st July 2020.
If I defer to 2021 can I defer again to 2022?
No - as part of our standard policy it is not possible to defer your entry to future races. Deferring from 2020 to 2021 is an exception due the cancellation of the race.
What is happening with Mini Marathon?
Sadly, we will not be able to offer a Mini Marathon this year, we look forward to seeing all our Mini Marathon runners on 3rd October 2021.
When will I receive my refund?
Refunds will be made within 10 working days to the card you paid with.
I can't make the 2021 date can I defer to a later edition?
We are sorry we can't offer deferral to a later edition of the MBNA Chester Marathon or Metric Marathon. Please choose one of the alternative options.
I can't make the 2021 date can I transfer my place to another runner and if so how?
If you can't make the 2021 date and don't want to choose one of the other options available, you can defer to 2021 and then, under our usual transfer rules, you may still transfer your place to another runner.
I entered the race through a transfer what are my options?
As you didn't pay us directly for your place then we are unable to refund you as we do not hold any financial information for you. Your options are to defer to the 2021 race or to cancel your entry. Your email will explain details of this.
I entered the race through a free place what are my options?
If you registered for the race using a free place provided by one of our sponsors, partnered charities or winning a competition, your entry has been automatically deferred to next year's race on 3rd October 2021.
What about the money I have already raised in sponsorship for charity?
Active Leisure Events do not administer the fundraising of charity runners, so you should contact the charity you have signed up with or check the guidance on your fundraising website (e.g. Just Giving, Virgin Money Giving). Your donation will be even more important than ever to the charity. You’ve already put in the hard work in your training so do consider still giving them your fundraising or continue to fundraise for next year if you have deferred your place. You could smash your target now you have more time!
What is happening with the 2020 Chester Triple?
Sadly there will be no 2020 Chester Triple. We know you are as disappointed as we are, but we will come back bigger and better when the Chester Triple returns in 2021.
Will there be a virtual race?
The MBNA Chester Marathon and Metric Marathon 2020 have been cancelled before ordering any T-shirts or medals, and so we are unable to offer a virtual event. You are able to defer to our 2021 event for free, or to receive a full refund.
What happens to the add-on’s I ordered?
This depends on the option that you select.
- If you defer your entry to 2021 then all add-ons you ordered will automatically move across to your 2021 entry.
- If you request a 50% or 100% refund, or cancel your entry, then 100% of your add-ons will be refunded.
- If you donate your entry your add-ons will also be donated to help secure the future of the event.
How will you make the 2021 events secure?
We will take the appropriate measures required to ensure the safety and health of our runners, staff, contractors, volunteers, spectators, local community and society as a whole. We will follow the latest government guidance at all times and work with the council and safety advisory groups during the planning and delivery of our 2021 events.
All aspects of our events will be reviewed and considered to ensure that they are Covid secure and appropriate to the situation (e.g. social distancing, hygiene, medical cover, our venues, the start/course/finish, drink stations, travel to/from the event).
Never miss our training runs or special offers!
The route is renowned for being fast and largely flat – more than 70% of our runners achieve PBs!
